Investigation of Question 8: Church-State Developments in Germany 1934-35

The historical intersection of the Catholic Church, Nazi Germany, Pope Pius XI, and Pope Pius XII is more congested with works of historians than virtually any other topic in history. Yet it has thus far proved impossible to find any historical work that can readily explain how Pius XI and Cardinal Pacelli could have countenanced an ecclesiastical blessing of the symbol of Nazi ideology in October 1934, elevating the perpetrator to the rank of cardinal a year later.

In order to gain an understanding of the surrounding circumstances, this site will present a timeline of significant events in the relationship between the Roman Catholic Church and Nazi Germany during years leading up to the events in question.  One historian with expertise on Nazi Germany has suggested that the events of the swastika-blessing be assessed in light of the events including the currency trials and morality trials against Catholic clerics in Germany.
